For your consideration: Beyond the Black Rainbow

Recently I’ve decided to start watching obscure movies again. I used to choose independent and obscure movies on a regular basis. Somehow I fell out of the habit and began watching TV instead. I’m not exactly sure how the transition happened, but I’m switching back and damn did I choose a mind f*** to come back to.

They other day I watched a movie called Beyond the Black Rainbow which is on Netflix. It’s a bizarre, unnerving movie that defies description but I’ll give it a shot. It takes place in the year 1983 because why not. With a color palette exclusively of red and blue, we follow a psychiatrist who is part of a company pioneering a naturalpathic approach to achieving happiness. His only patient that we see is a young girl who refuses to speak. They only see each other through windows and monitors. She is clearly victimized and heavily drugged and he is clearly mentally unstable. From there the viewer is best served by turning off all thought and just absorbing the experience.

The movie is by far more interesting than it is entertaining. If you’re looking to be thrilled or want riviting plot, Beyond the Black Rainbow isn’t for you. But if you’re like me and have no problem watching a movie that seems to want you to decode it rather than simply watch it, you might have a good time here.

The thing is, I really don’t know if I liked it or not. Days have passed and I’m still unsure. The experience of watching it was unique, and the trippy scenes were really a treat, but what it all amounts to in the end is… well not much. But it does lend itself to conversation, so I hope one or two of you out there are willing to give Beyond the Black Rainbow a chance and tell me what you think.

So what’s the strangest, most psychedelic or most obscure film you’ve ever seen? Let me know in the comments below.
