The runny nosed dragon…
What was supposed to be a busy week of writing and formatting slipping into a strange week of lightheaded drowsiness and inactivity.
My wife and kid were sick early on, but with the aid of my power drink (water, honey, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice) I was able to fight off illness like a stalwart knight battling a runny nosed dragon and it’s sleepless dragon pup.
Not to say my wife’s a dragon, because she’s actually a sexy awesome babe. Ok, I’m getting away from myself here.
Short Stories, Rule Books and Guest Posts, Oh My!
Was that title lame? Yeah it was lame, but I’m keeping it anyway.
The Putrid Corpse
For those of you not in the know, The Putrid Corpse refers to a pub featured in Discovering Aberration, as well as the drink distilled in the pub, The Putrid Corpse Extra Special Reserve Gin.
No dead bodies, nothing morbid… Or is there?
This week I was able to churn out only 1000 words on my current work in progress, a short story called The Putrid Corpse bringing it to 5000 words. This is going to be a great addition to the Discovering Aberration universe featuring a new cast of characters and a few familiar locations.
I’ll be posting some excerpts from The Putrid Corpse sometime soon, so you’ll be able to read is as it’s produced. Look for it in the near future.
Meanwhile, you may have noticed some changes around the website. One of the last nights (I can’t remember which because I’m still in a foggy head space) I stayed up til 1:00 working on the website.
New elements include my Works in Progress bars. These bars are tracking all the many things that should come your way sometime in the coming months. Some of them have been inches away from publication for months, so I’m using those bars to help remind myself to push them out and get them done!
So here’s the rundown of works in progress and their current states of production.
If you’re a frequenter of this blog, you should know that Discovering Aberration is my upcoming novel coming Jan 20th.
DA is currently in beta reading and editing, but this week I’m also preparing the digital ARC’s (Advance Reader Copies) to send out to reviewers to get some publicity rolling out.
If you have a blog and you want to feature Discovering Aberration in any form (review, preview, interview, cover reveal, guest post, etc.) just let me know by sending me an email (scbarrus AT awayandaway DOT com).
The Hanging Gardens
This is a short story I wrote and published 2 years ago in Bricolage Magazine. Right now I just need to clean it up, format it, and design a cover. That’s it. And it looks like I finally have time to do just that. Keep your fingers crossed and The Hanging Gardens might be out within the month.
Another short story I wrote, but this one’s even older at 3 years. Following a young man named Troy who’s in the midst of a psychological breakdown, Tall People was actually in the midst of being adapted into an independent film for which I wrote the script.
As of last year, the actor playing Troy had a psychological breakdown while filming the climax… Unfortunately that scene was filmed in the middle of production, so they had to shut the whole thing down as they searched for a new actor. Then, due to scheduling conflicts, the whole production when on halt.
Last I heard, the movie was back in pre production, but that was last year. Who knows if this film will ever be a reality, but I still have my fingers crossed.
In any case, the short story is in the same place as The Hanging Gardens, just a couple steps away from publication.
The Meta Game: Your Life is the Game
This one is a little different. Last year I began writing a rule book that turns your life into a game complete with skills, XP, level ups, and more.
It was originally supposed to be an app, but our production crew fell apart and the project was put on indefinite hold. Now there’s only me, but I still get emails all the time from people asking about what’s going on with The Meta Game.
Well, if you’re one of those people, you’ve inspired me to follow through with what I started. Unfortunately the App isn’t feasible at this time, but a core rule book is!
To be honest, this one has a long way to go. The rules are complete and just need some refining. Then the book needs to be fleshed out a little, and the character sheets need to be cleaned up.
Once all that is done, I’ll release it as a hardcover core rule book. Hopefully I’ll be able to pull all that together before the middle of next year.
This is a project that I am interested in building a partnership around, so if any of you out there like the idea of this and have some experience creating core rule books, send me an email (scbarrus AT awayandaway DOT com).
And last, I’m working on a guest post this week for Nerds Feather which I’m pretty excited about. If you enjoy video games, RPG’s in particular, you’ll want to keep an eye out for that post which I’ll link to from this blog.
And that pretty much covers it. There’s a lot of stuff coming around the corner, so keep your eyes peeled! I plan on having a free opportunity to get each one of these works, so check back often so you don’t miss out!
